SolidariTee
SolidariTee is an expression of solidarity, and its remit is simple: each £10 t-shirt which we sell helps to fund legal aid in Greece. So that we can donate as much as possible, we purposefully keep our administrative costs very low, whether that means reusing wrapping paper to post our SolidariTotes, asking students to carry SolidariTees with them to eliminate delivery costs, and working from our dorms. It’s particularly important for us that the money from our donations and sales is used particularly effectively — none of us are paid for our time, in any case — and so we tend to choose smaller NGOs which we can help expand and grow.
We at SolidariTee strive to counteract the dramatic decrease in the media coverage of the crisis by loudly talking, and visibly supporting refugees through the wearing of SolidariTees. This year, for example, we have launched a series of infographics and myth busters on our social media to present clear information on the refugee crisis to our followers. At SolidariTee we also maintain a commitment to sustainable change. That’s why we support legal aid — by funding a lawyer or a legal adviser, we can ensure that we’re dealing with the problem at its root.

Did you know that 137,500 girls missed a day of school last year because they couldn’t afford menstrual products? One in ten girls have been forced to improvise. 1 in 10 parents have admitted to sending their daughter to school without pads and tampons, and 6 per cent of parents have been so desperate, they’ve resorted to stealing on occasions they couldn’t afford them.
Kenya has repealed tax on menstrual products, and last month pledged to distribute pads to every single one of it’s 4.2m schoolgirls in its public schools. Kerala, a state in Southern India, is handing out period protection for schoolgirls in a bid to keep girls in school when they menstruate… Yet, the UK seems to be lagging behind in our will to provide access to menstrual hygiene management.

CANCER IN CHILDREN
- Childhood cancer is rare – around 1,600 new cases are diagnosed every year in the UK (in children aged 0-14 years)
- This means that around one child in 500 will develop some form of cancer by the age of 14 years
- Childhood cancers account for 0.5% of all cancers in the UK
- Cancer occurs more commonly in boys than girls, by a ratio of around 6:5. This varies by tumour type; the most striking excess is in lymphomas, which boys are more than twice as likely to develop
- In Britain, childhood cancer incidence rates increased by 38% between 1966-2000. Some of this increase is thought to be due to improvements in diagnosis and registration
- The childhood cancer rate in the UK is the lowest in Europe, and one of the lowest of all Western industrialised countries. Australia and the US have some of the highest rates. The reasons for this variation are not clear.

FREDERICK DOUGLASS – born into slavery in C19th. He eventually escaped and dedicated his life to fighting to end slavery, for women’s rights and Irish independence.
